Jorge Manilla
Religious images and iconography such as bleeding Christ figures with
natural hair and thorns that open the skin, showing suffering and pain,
are an important motif throughout my work. These images raise a serial
of questions that confront me with the religious discourse,
which I was told as a child, with God and his creation: men.
Both the prehispanic indigenous tradition of sacrifices, and the religious
history of Mexico inspire me to design and create unique pieces with a
profound symbolism. In this way my thoughts, emotions and feelings take
on a physical form or shape.
A functional image is the image that can tell us a story; an image that speaks
for itself but also asks questions for itself. In this way, this image succeeds
in its goal and changes the soul of the audience.
The result is a world of associations and meanings which invite us to engage
in a constant dialogue…
